Interview
  1. Evolution Hotel

What do you currently do for a living?

  2. Line Kolbe

I’m a personal trainer and instructor at a gym.

  3. Evolution Hotel

How did you get involved with the sport?

  4. Line Kolbe

I was introduced to lifting weights when I was 18 by my boyfriend at that time. I was hooked immediately. I loved (and still do) getting stronger. I saw an old photo of Cory Everson from when she won her first Miss Olympia and the dream of getting a body like that started to grow inside of me.

  5. Evolution Hotel

What do you enjoy about being a bodybuilder/bodyfitness girl?

  6. Line Kolbe

Bodybuilding is my passion. I love the dedication it takes and the feeling I get from a tough workout. I actually love the food, both in the off-season and in-season, along with the walks with our dog as cardio. I love being an inspiration to others and the fact that I’m able to transform my body to make it look like I want. I find that very fascinating. Another thing I like is the building phase where you get bigger, stronger, and have tons of energy. Then the diet phase where you get leaner and leaner and really start to see the muscles. I love having a goal, then being on stage to show what I’ve worked so hard for. I guess I enjoy the entire bodybuilding lifestyle!

  7. Evolution Hotel

What’s your favorite thing and/or routine you enjoy when training for a competition?

  8. Line Kolbe

It’s hard to chose… It has to be the lifting weights. The tough painful workouts and seeing the results.

  9. Evolution Hotel

Would you please share your competition history with us?

  10. Line Kolbe

  11. Evolution Hotel

What are your hobbies and interests outside of your sport?

  12. Line Kolbe

We have a dog and she takes up a lot of time. We take courses in training and I want to start going to competitions with her. I also ride a motorcycle, and my husband and I take a long vacation each year on our bikes. We also take short weekend trips. We have biked a lot in the Austrian mountains and have been on track days where we had an instructor to help improve our riding skills.

  13. Evolution Hotel

What is a day-in-the-life of Line like?

  14. Line Kolbe

I get up at around 7-8am because I work in the evening at the gym, and I go to bed pretty late. I do a short walk with our dog. (In-season I usually do longer one, but at the moment I’m building). This has become such a nice start of the day. When we get home I usually sit by the computer and eat my breakfast while reading and posting on forums (e.g. siouxcountry.com) and checking emails. Then I usually have some stuff to do, like preparing for my job as a PT and normal home stuff. I make my food for the rest of the day and I get to the gym in the early afternoon in order to do my training before I start working. Then the late afternoon and evening is spent working in the gym with clients and teaching classes. When I get home from the gym I eat my last meal of the day, check the forums and mail again, and go to bed. If I’m in-season, I might do a walk again before going to bed.

  15. Evolution Hotel

What do you consider your best feature?

  16. Line Kolbe

    My willpower and dedication.

  17. Evolution Hotel

Do you have a favorite lift or exercise?

  18. Line Kolbe

Yes I love training legs. I love squats.

  19. Evolution Hotel

    What is your best bodypart?

  20. Line Kolbe

Beside my mind that makes it all possible? ;-) My legs. They're strong and grow easy.

  21. Evolution Hotel

    Best Lifts?

  22. Line Kolbe

I can never remember my best lifts. When asked this, I always get the urge to go to the gym and test 1RMs. At the moment I'm not as strong as I've been in the past because I recently competed, but I get stronger with every workout now. I was my strongest some years ago when I was six months into a very productive off-season. I did over 100kg squats on the smith. That I remember, and I know I'll get stronger than that this off-season.

  23. Evolution Hotel

Who are your role models? And/or who do you look up to in your life?

  24. Line Kolbe

My mom and dad are the ones who showed me that willpower and dedication will get you what you want. They taught me to be strong and stand up for who I am and that it’s good to be different. I’ve always been proud that I’m not like all the others.

  25. Evolution Hotel

Who are your favorite bodybuilders/bodyfitness(figure) athletes? (male or female)

  26. Line Kolbe

I really like the look of Female Pro BB Isabelle Turell. I’m sure she will become one to watch in the future. I love the look of Danish Amateur Figure competitor Kristina Dybdahl. She will become pro for sure. As for the guys, I like the look of the smaller physiques. The ones that compete in Classic BB. They are more athletic looking and I find that more appealing. I love the look of a big female BB but not the look of a really big male BB. The girls still have that nice little midsection, but the big guys unfortunately don’t. The male BB of the early 80’s looked good, especially Frank Zane who was amazing.

  27. Evolution Hotel

    Favourite Quotes?

  28. Line Kolbe

I have many… I like the ones that indicate that everything is possible, that even though it might be hard to get there you can do it, and that it’s ok to be extreme in order to achieve what you want. Here are some of my favourites:
“Obsession is the word the lazy use to describe the dedicated!”
“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity!”
“It's never too late to become what you might have been!”
“Everything is possible for the one carrying the will in his heart!”

  29. Evolution Hotel

    Motto?

  30. Line Kolbe

If you want it, you can do it!

  31. Evolution Hotel

What’s your most inspiring moment in sports?

  32. Line Kolbe

It has to be when I went to watch my first competition. I just knew that I wanted to do that too – I wanted to be on that stage like them. It was two years after I watched my first competition that I competed myself.

  33. Evolution Hotel

What has been your best moment in the gym or during a competition?

  34. Line Kolbe

In the gym it’s when I set personal records. At a competition that feeling of walking out on the stage for the first time was incredible. Then it was when my mom and dad came to see me compete, which meant so much to me.

  35. Evolution Hotel

Your definition of bodybuilding/body fitness and what does your sport mean to you?

  36. Line Kolbe

It means a lot to me. My definition… Well, Like my Coach Helle also says: “There’s no difference between figure and BB. It’s all body sculpting”. We do what it takes to make our bodies look the way we want them to. It’s a lifestyle, not just a hobby.

  37. Evolution Hotel

Do you remember the first indication you got from another person that maybe you had some talent?

  38. Line Kolbe

My first coach said to me that she thought my dedication to my training and diet was admirable!

  39. Evolution Hotel

    What are your athletic goals?

  40. Line Kolbe

Looking like the female bodybuilders did in the first half of the 1980s. As I said in the beginning of the Interview: “I saw a photo and was hooked.” That photo of Cory is still imprinted in the back of my mind. It has always been the goal. That means building a lot of muscle and getting the right symmetry.

  41. Evolution Hotel

    When is your next competition?

  42. Line Kolbe

I actually don’t know. I want to make some bigger changes to my body before competing again. Until now I’ve been a figure girl on the outside, and a bodybuilder in my heart. I have to take the time it takes to change so I’ll become a bodybuilder both inside and out. My next competition will be Classic Bodybuilding and I will do it when I’m ready.

  43. Evolution Hotel

What do you like in particular about Evolution Hotel/your coach?

  44. Line Kolbe

I’ve not been here so long, but I really like it already. In particular… That I feel I can be completely honest to Helle and that she’s always there, just a phone call away, no matter what.

  45. Evolution Hotel

What would you say was your biggest life success so far?

  46. Line Kolbe

As in my bodyfitness life, it’s my last competitions where I achieved the goal of doing it all by myself. I did my own training plans, diet programs, and peak week prep. Ever since I started competing that has been my goal. I did it, and I looked my best ever as well. Now I’ve achieved that goal I’m setting my mind up for achieving my other goal I’ve had since I started: To get big enough for, and competing in Bodybuilding. My biggest life success in general? That has been to move to another country with my, then, boyfriend. We moved from Denmark to Sweden. What a change! New place, new job, new friends, and new language… I had a dream of how I wanted my new life in Sweden to be. My husband and I have now lived here for a year and I have achieved that dream. My job is perfect, I have great friends, I now read, write and speak the new language, and our house is now just like we dreamt it would be like. Last but not least, it’s here we got married. I believe that if you want something, believe in it, and set you mind to it, you will achieve it. It’s incredible how happy I am and how perfect my new life has become.

  47. Evolution Hotel

    Favorite Food?

  48. Line Kolbe

I love my diet food. All of it! My favorite cheat food is pizza.

  49. Evolution Hotel

What other sports do you enjoy watching?

  50. Line Kolbe

I like all kinds of individual sports from dancing to 100m sprints. I do not find team sports that interesting, as I am a person who always wants to beat my current best performance.

  51. Evolution Hotel

What other sports have you done or are you currently doing?

  52. Line Kolbe

I am an avid runner and have raced in a marathon and three half marathons. I have also been target shooting since I was a little girl, but have not been shooting for a few years now and having been in the military I enjoy obstacle courses and field running.

  53. Evolution Hotel

    Nickname?

  54. Line Kolbe

Kolbe. It’s my surname and what I was called when I was in the military. It just kind of stuck to me afterwards.

  55. Evolution Hotel

    Self-description of personality?

  56. Line Kolbe

I have a strong willpower and I’m very goal oriented and dedicated, some would say obsessed, when I set myself up for something. That means I achieve my goals. It also means I sometimes want to do too many things perfect at once and that can stress me, and if I can’t do everything perfect it irritates me. I’m a very happy person. I believe in the best in everybody even though I then sometimes get disappointed. I love helping others achieve their goals and I love my job as a personal trainer.

  57. Evolution Hotel

What motivated you to get into bodybuilding/body fitness?

  58. Line Kolbe

Well, after that first initial spark that started the dream to achieve such a body, I started reading bodybuilding and fitness magazines. I read all I could find and started educating myself about training and nutrition. I’ve always been wanting to learn more and more. But it was in these magazines I learned about competing, that it was an opportunity. So I set the goal to compete, contacted a coach and started my first journey to a competition. I was hooked on competing from the beginning of that prep. I eminently loved that commitment I’d given myself to reach that goal.

  59. Evolution Hotel

What is your biggest obstacle to success?

  60. Line Kolbe

My level of activity. As I work in a gym and teach a lot of classes, I’m prone to overtraining and injuries. I want to build so when I lift it’s very intense, then I need to rest to recover and that’s where the problems start. I don’t rest enough when I have my classes. I do try to take it easy in my classes, but it’s not what I’m best at. I often end up doing too much and that affects my recovery from my lifting. I need to be better at doing less in my classes.

  61. Evolution Hotel

What’s the most important principle you have learned from your coach?

  62. Line Kolbe

Pain is your friend! Good pain in the muscles when I work out. I love that!

  63. Evolution Hotel

What’s the best part of competition for you?

  64. Line Kolbe

I think the last week before the comp is so great. You see changes every day during that time. You don’t feel worn out because you are so close that the adrenaline is keeping you energized. It’s the week where you get your hair done, the colour, the last luxurious beauty stuff done. I always take this last week off from work to do everything perfectly and enjoy it. Then on competition day, it’s the most fantastic feeling to step on stage. When you first walk out there and you hear the audience. I can’t describe how I feels. I get so emotional. The moment I’ve been working so hard for has come. All the prep leads to that moment and I enjoy it so much.

  65. Evolution Hotel

If you could change something in the sport, what would it be?

  66. Line Kolbe

I don’t like that we are looked upon as weird, if we live the fitness lifestyle. If you play football/soccer or other well-known sports. it’s accepted that you have to eat a certain way, do you training etc. It’s often not the case in our sport. I would like our sport to get more exposure and become more accepted by society. We are not freaks, we do not all do drugs, and we, the women, do not want to become men! We are actually very open and nice people. We are quite normal, we just have a goal, and go for it.

I would like that the media would show the positive side of this sport. There’s so many success. I personally know two girls who turned anorexia and bulimia into a fitness lifestyle. One of them competes in Figure and the other girl might do it in the future and they now both have a healthy body and mind. I work with people who want to lose weight. Those success stories should also be told; How this sport can change a persons life and that this person can start liking the way he or she looks and feels. I would also like if the media would cover more of the competitions. Why don’t we see competitions on local TV and interviews of the competitors like we do with so many other sports? If we did that we would not all seem so weird to the average person. There’s just not enough information and coverage of our sport.

  67. Evolution Hotel

What was your first contest like?

  68. Line Kolbe

A dream come true. I cried with joy standing on that stage knowing I had done all I could to be my absolutely best.

  69. Evolution Hotel

Describe your life before bodybuilding/bodyfitness – what are the biggest changes to your life?

  70. Line Kolbe

My biggest change is that I found my true passion. This is what I want to do, the life I want to live. I started lifting when I was 18 years old so before that I was just, well, young and very active. I have developed a lot in my fitness life, learned a lot and become more secure. I have became stronger as a person while getting stronger in my body. I have developed my will power and belief that I can do what I set my mind to. Had it not been for lifting weights and getting into this way of living, I would not have done many of the things I’ve done in my life, like becoming an officer in the Danish army or taking the step to move to another country. I had a very tough period in my life some years ago and I came through being stronger because I kept living this way. When all was at a mess I still had my training and my diet. Now I really can’t imagine living any other way.
